RG Kar Rape: Has it exposed our Society?

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (Image Source - OneIndia) The RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata was established in 1886, and is Asia's first private medical college. Once the symbol of hope and excellence, this institution turned into the face of hell on August 9, when a trainee doctor was raped and murdered on duty.  Since then West Bengal has been in a state of turmoil.  The entire country has gone through a variety of emotions. The gruesome nature of the crime has sent shockwaves across the nation. Support has poured in for the deceased's family from across the country. People have been out on the street. There have been calls for reforms. There have also been conspiracy theories, and accusations of attempts to interfere in the investigation. The political fraternity has, of course, been involved in a blame game. RG Kar Medical College & Hospital has been in the news for all the wrong reasons or perhaps not.  RG Kar Medical College incident shows...

Yellow Dal

One look at the Dal and Ramesh knew that it was not cooked properly. The colour was just not right; it was too yellow for his liking. Few people in the world knew about Dal better than Ramesh, he was what you would call an expert in the subject. For the average person, Dal is a simple Indian cuisine, a straightforward dish that anyone can churn up from their kitchen. However, there are numerous delicate intricacies that can affect the final outcome of the dish. And Ramesh certainly knew how to turn up a tasty bowl of Dal. His “Tandoori Dal” would run out every evening and people would turn away from the doorstep, dejected. Every night, when he would sleep near the tandoor, he would smile and remember the lavish praise that his creation had generated. The murmur of people around snapped him out of his daydreams. Ramesh looked to his side and watched families sitting by the roadside, devouring the lacklustre palate of Rice and Dal with glee. It was a stark contrast to the long lin...

Husband and Wife

CRASH! The mug slipped from his hand and scattered all over the floor, spilling tea all around. Neel let out a defeated sigh. There goes a good cup of tea! He got down to his knees, picked up the pieces and carefully dumped them inside the dustbin. He took out the mop and cleaned the floor. His wife walked into the dining room and saw him sweating on the floor. “Broke your cup?” She got down and helped Neel clean up the mess. “Yeah. No more tea for the next 2 weeks, until the market re-opens and I get myself a new mug!” “Please! You need at least 10 cups of tea in a day, how can you go for 2 weeks without your lifeline?” “The country is on a 21-day lock-down due to the Coronavirus epidemic, remember? All shops are closed, except for basic amenities, so no chance of buying a new cup. And I broke my spare months ago.” “So? Use mine. You need it more than me anyway.” “Are you sure?” She smiled at him and he realized how lucky he was. A few thousand...

Chandrayaan 2 and the 3 gifts of Failure

Image courtesy - ISRO The world as we know right now is built on success. We are programmed to embrace victories and ignore defeats. We are programmed to believe that the society only needs the winners and the losers can go back home. But what actually happens to people who fail? And are the most successful people always successful? Have they never tasted defeat in their lives? It was a question that bothered me all of a sudden today. The reason was simple: Chandrayaan-2

Could have been You, Could have been Me

The Picture that horrified India. Photo Credits - PTI 44 lives lost in an instant, so that the rest of us could live in peace. It could have been you and me, but we sit in the comforts of our homes, mostly oblivious to the perils of our brothers and sisters who have chosen the harder way of life. The Day the Country will never forget A small town in the state of Jammu and Kashmir became a household name overnight for a very tragic reason. On the day specially dedicated to celebrating Love and the matters of the heart, the town of Pulwama was drenched in the colour of blood. On a day dedicated to the purest of emotions, a deafening blast rocked the Valley of Kashmir, as a Suicide Bomber ran a vehicle full of explosives into a CRPF bus. Valentine's Day in India would never be the same again. The inital reports said that at least 44 lives were lost in an instant. 44 men traveling in a bus, people of flesh and blood. People with families and dreams and aspirations. It co...
